The Quranic expression"Every soul shall taste death"(*kullu nafsin dhā’iqatu al-mawt*)is a thought-provoking phrase regarding the nature of death, as it describes death using a term primarily associated with the sense of taste and direct experience. The central focus of this study is to examine the rhetorical dimensions of pairing "tasting"(*dhā’iqah*)with"death(*mawt*)and to determine what additional semantic nuance this expression conveys compared to more direct references to death found elsewhere in the Quran.Despite the attention commentators and scholars of rhetoric have paid to this expression, a coherent explanation of its rhetorical nuances—particularly regarding the relationship between the literal meaning of *dhawq*(tasting) and the existential experience of death—has rarely been examined in isolation. Therefore, employing a descriptive-analytical method and drawing upon Quranic verses as well as linguistic, exegetical, and rhetorical sources, the present study analyzes the usage of the phrase *dhā’iqat al-mawt* (tasting death) in the Holy Quran.Research findings indicate that the choice of the word "taste"(*dhawq*) for death—beyond signifying its inevitability and universality—emphasizes a personal, immediate, and inescapable perception of it. From a rhetorical perspective, this expression may also be viewed as a form of metaphor or metonymy in which death is depicted as something that can be tasted and experienced; this imagery highlights the intensity of the human encounter with death and the transition from theoretical awareness to concrete realization. Ultimately, the expression "tasting death"(*dhā'iqat al-mawt*)is not merely a report of the occurrence of death; rather, through a concise and rhetorical structure, it articulates an existential, all-encompassing, and experiential truth regarding human destiny.
