Abstract
The findings indicate that Verse 136 of al-Baqarah, given its context among the verses discussing the dispute of the People of the Book with the Muslims and their claim of superiority, necessitates the use of the plural address “Qūlū” (Say ye) as a response from the Muslims to the People of the Book. The generality of this address leads to the subsequent mention of the preposition of termination “Ilā” (to) – due to the ultimate destination of the revelation being the people – and consequently the repetition of “Ūtīya” (was given) – considering the general audience and the necessity of elaboration.
