Abstract
According to some thinkers, "cross" is one of the Arabic words, the origin of which is disputed by researchers. This word is one of the words whose meaning and initial usage have undergone changes due to various developments. The importance and necessity of this research is due to the fact that this word has an Iranian origin and has changed its meaning in the Arabic language, and understanding it has a great impact on the understanding of the divine word. This research, with the historical and analytical method and with the aim of investigating the historical and genealogical origin of the word "cross", analyzes the evolution of its meaning in the Arabic language and the historical use of the derivatives of the word "cross" in the context of the verses of the Quran. The results of this research show that the Arabic word "cross" is from the Persian root "chalipa", which was taken as a symbol of sun worship from the ancient Iranian civilization and was used in most of the ancient civilizations. During the religious and cultural developments in various civilizations and ethnicities, this symbol was first referred to as "the gallows" and after the crucifixion of Jesus (pbuh), it became known as the holy and exclusive symbol of Christians. Then, by finding its way into the Arabic language, the concepts of "hardness", "backbone" and "hanging" have also developed in meaning. In the Holy Quran, the two concepts of "man's back bone" and "being hanged" are used in various derivatives.
