Abstract
The theory of the "narrative present of the past" (māḍī-e konuni-namā) accounts for structures such as the active participle and the imperfect verb which, under the influence of contextual indicators, portray a past event in a vivid, present-like manner. Adopting a semantic approach and a descriptive-analytical method, the present study examines the word "mukhrij" in verse 72 of Surah al-Baqarah, seeking to answer the question of what this theory reveals about the temporal meaning of "mukhrij" in this verse. To this end, the views of scholars such as Raḍī al-Dīn al-Astarābādhī, Ibn Hishām al-Anṣārī, and al-Suyūṭī are presented and discussed. Drawing on Ayatollah Javadi Amoli's exegetical view, the study concludes that, within the context of the verse, "mukhrij" conveys the certainty and inevitability of the act's occurrence in the near future and the continuity of this divine attribute — indicating that the act already accomplished ("you killed a soul") is as certain and inescapable as though it had already taken place and were now an established fact. Given the obstinacy of the Jews of the revelation era — referenced in the verses preceding and following this one in connection with their concealment and disputation — the use of "mukhrij" extends beyond its literal meaning to signify a decisive, exposing warning, reflecting God's eternal knowledge and absolute power, and establishing a contextual correspondence between past concealment and present disgrace.
