The present study aimed to redefine Qur’anic oaths as independent speech acts and examine their mechanisms of modality creation and interpersonal distance regulation through Halliday’s interpersonal metafunction. A descriptive-analytical, corpus-based method was adopted. From all 6,236 Qur’anic verses, 118 oath-bearing clauses (81 explicit oaths in 29 surahs) were extracted and annotated across four layers: syntactic-formal, modal-attitudinal, interpersonal function, and thematic classification of the muqsam bihi. Reliability was verified by Cohen’s Kappa (0.87), and both quantitative and qualitative analyses were integrated. Findings showed that 43% of oaths lack an explicit verb, and 28% of oath responses realize directive or commissive acts. The lā uqsimu structure appears exclusively in eight Meccan surahs, functioning as linguistic deconstruction to generate certainty beyond ordinary modality. The non-random distribution of oaths confirmed their strict conformity to situational context. A novel typology was proposed: “intuitive-demonstrative” (via conceptual metaphor), “emotive-evaluative” (via moral shock), “exclusive-categorical” (via breaking convention), and “restorative-gentle” (via honoring the addressee). The study concludes that Qur’anic oaths transcend rhetorical emphasis, acting as dynamic communicative strategies for engineering perception and persuasion. Consequently, replacing formal-thematic analyses with a functional approach illuminates the discursive inimitability of the Qur’an and provides a systematic model for integrating corpus linguistics and discourse analysis into exegesis.
